Perimenopause Symptoms That Make You Feel 20 Years Older Overnight — And What’s Actually Helping
Perimenopause has a way of making you feel like your body suddenly stopped cooperating.
Your joints ache to the point where you’re picking up your coffee mug with two hands, praying you don’t drop it straight down the front of your shirt and baptize your tits in caffeine.
Energy?? Nonexistent.
You find yourself wondering when the last time you actually saw daylight from somewhere outside the four walls of your apartment.
Meanwhile, your partner has taken up permanent residency at the hottest club in town: Back Rubs & Tugs.
Attendance is mandatory at 9 p.m. nightly, because God forbid you go a single evening not begging him to knead the knots out of your back, hips, and whatever mysterious muscle decided to revolt that day.
But here’s the thing I’ve learned pretty quickly in this stage of life: movement matters more now than it ever did before.
Not punishing workouts.
Not two-hour gym sessions.
Just consistent, gentle reminders to my body that we’re still very much alive.
And honestly?
My partner seems pretty committed to making sure I remember that part too.
The Perimenopause Symptoms No One Warned Us About
For something that happens to literally half the population, perimenopause is shockingly under-discussed.
No one sits you down at thirty-five and says,“Hey, just a heads up — in a few years your hormones might start acting like your drunk Uncle at a wedding. ”
Instead, the symptoms creep in quietly. At first you think you’re just tired.
Maybe stressed from ceasing your anxiety meds.
Maybe you slept wrong and that’s why you can’t lift your arms over your head without them feeling light a ton weight.
But then the list starts getting even suspiciously longer.
The Hot Flashes That Come Out of Nowhere
One minute you're perfectly fine.
The next minute your body decides it’s time to simulate the climate conditions of the Sahara Desert. Whether it be having one of the most prolific hot flashes to date the first night almost a year ago, my partner and I spent together. Or waking up looking very much a version of Curly Sue — when I damn well know I went to bed with a A-1 blowout.
Your chest heats up.
Your face flushes.
Your hairline becomes suspiciously damp.
And you just can’t seem to ease the tit sweat from the missus under carriage.
Hot flashes happen because estrogen fluctuations confuse the brain’s temperature regulation system, which is a fancy way of saying your internal thermostat is suddenly as toked as you are.
Achy Joints That Make You Feel Eighty
Suddenly: you can’t figure out why extending and flexing your elbow to lift your coffee mug is now a risky game if you aren’t using two hands. I was blaming my Bernese Mountain Dog for pulling on the leash. Said incident happened in December, I think we can cross Ellie off the culprit list.
Your knees hurt.
Your hips ache.
Your back feels stiff.
Your shoulders protest when you reach for something simple.
And you’re sitting there thinking:
Did I sleep wrong… or did we go harder than I remember last night?
Estrogen actually plays a role in joint lubrication and inflammation control, so when those levels start fluctuating, the joints notice immediately.
Which explains why picking up your coffee mug suddenly feels like a minor athletic event.
Stretching Rituals (Because My Joints Suddenly Have Opinions)
Perimenopause joints are a special kind of rude.
So I started incorporating daily stretching rituals, especially in the morning and before bed.
Nothing intense.
Just slow stretches for:
hips
back
shoulders
hamstrings
I’ve been using a few simple yoga essentials that make it easier to actually stick with it:
yoga mat
stretching strap
foam roller
The goal isn’t turning into a yoga influencer.
The goal is simply reminding my joints that they still belong to a functioning adult.
Bone-Deep Fatigue
This isn’t the normal “I stayed up too late watching Netflix” kind of tired.
This is the kind of exhaustion where:
your brain feels foggy
your body feels heavy
motivation disappears
Hormonal shifts can disrupt sleep cycles, cortisol levels, and energy regulation, leaving many women feeling permanently drained even when they technically slept.
And yes, it’s every bit as frustrating as it sounds.
Gentle Movement That My Body Actually Tolerates
One thing I’ve learned quickly during this hormonal circus is that movement matters more now than it ever did before — but it doesn’t have to be intense to count.
Now that the weather is warming up, daily walks with Ellie have become a ritual.
Fresh air.
Sunlight.
A Bernese Mountain Dog who believes every squirrel is a national threat.
Walking helps with joint mobility, mood, and circulation — and honestly reminds me that movement can still feel good.
Then there are the 3-lb weights permanently living on my desk like tiny judgmental paperweights.
They sit there so I can’t pretend I don’t see them.
A few bicep curls.
Some shoulder presses.
Arm raises between emails.
Nothing dramatic — but these small strength moments help support muscle tone, joint stability, and bone health, which becomes more important as hormones start playing hide-and-seek.
Between the walks, stretching, and desk weights, my body gets the message that we’re still very much alive — even if my joints occasionally disagree.
ThriveOn stronger. (My Afternoon Energy Lifeline)
When the mid-afternoon fatigue hits, I used to automatically reach for a second pot of coffee.
Now I’ve been reaching for ThriveOn Stronger packets instead.
It gives me a cleaner boost of energy without the jittery crash that coffee sometimes brings — which is especially helpful when hormones already have my nervous system doing Olympic-level gymnastics.
On the days when the fatigue feels extra aggressive, this has been one of the easiest swaps I’ve made.

The Sudden Skin Changes
One day your skincare routine works perfectly.
The next day your face feels like it aged twenty years overnight.
Skin may suddenly feel:
drier
thinner
less elastic
That’s because estrogen helps stimulate collagen production, which keeps skin firm and hydrated.
When those levels drop, the changes can feel like they happened overnight.
Which is deeply rude, frankly.
Hydration + Collagen for Joints and Skin
Two things that have helped more than expected:
collagen and hydration.
Collagen can support:
joint health
skin elasticity
hair strength
And when hormones start shifting, hydration becomes incredibly important for energy levels and headaches.
Simple habits, but they add up. Just the process and keep the routine.
Mood Swings That Rival Your Teenage Years
Remember puberty?
Perimenopause is like puberty’s chaotic older cousin.
Hormones fluctuate unpredictably, which can lead to:
irritability
depression
anxiety
emotional sensitivity
You’re not imagining it.
Your brain chemistry is literally adjusting to shifting hormone levels.
Science-Backed Support for Mood Swings
While I’m waiting to speak with my doctor next week, I’ve been focusing on a few wellness tools that support mood and hormone balance.
• Moon Juice Magnesi-Om – a magnesium blend that helps calm the nervous system, support sleep, and reduce stress-related mood swings. Magnesium plays a key role in regulating the neurotransmitters that affect mood.
• Nordic Naturals Omega-3s – research shows EPA and DHA support brain health, reduce inflammation, and help stabilize mood during hormonal shifts.
• Winona – a physician-guided hormone therapy platform I plan to explore after my doctor visit, since hormone therapy can help address the root cause of many perimenopause symptoms.
These aren’t magic fixes, but they’re helping support my body while I figure out the next steps with my doctor and a hormone specialist.
But Here’s the Good News
Perimenopause isn’t your body breaking down.
It’s your body transitioning into a new hormonal chapter.
And once you understand what’s happening, you can start supporting it with the right tools, routines, and medical guidance.
Which brings me to the things I’ve started incorporating lately — the supplements, rituals, and tiny habits that have actually helped take the edge off these symptoms while I wait to talk with my doctor next week.
Until next time…
Winona offers physician-guided hormone therapy designed to help women manage perimenopause and menopause symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disruption.

It’s the third date.
And you know what that means.
Isla Monroe certainly does.
